Easy Party Themes to DIY
Once you’ve chosen a theme and a color palette, head to craft stores, department stores, dollar stores and consignment shops to look for pieces that fit the look you’re going for — and only buy items that are on sale. The vases shown here were on clearance, costing about $2 each; the bamboo tray cost 7.99; silk flowers were all on sale for half price, totaling about $8; gold leaf tray (which could be used for wrapped treats, a candle or floral display or small party favors) was on clearance for $4. Candle wraps, cupcake wrappers, place cards, favor bag iron ons and card stock tropical leaves are all available from Build A Bash.
Be like David: Mood Board & Color Scheme
I totally identified with Schitt’s Creek character David Rose, who absolutely freaked if he didn’t have time to mood board and color scheme.
Choosing a theme, color palette and decor style is the exact place you SHOULD start when planning an event … so yes, be like David.
Honestly, most party themes lend themselves to DIY. But here are a few that are really easy:
Tropical: Think palm leaves, exotic flowers, touches of gold, mango and pineapple mimosas, coconut cake, flip-flops, sunglasses. Great for a wedding shower, baby shower, birthday or anniversary.
The Next Chapter: Think books, literary references and vintage typewriters. Great for a graduation, retirement or farewell party.
Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy: Think lemon garlands, white and yellow daisies, lemon cupcakes, lemon drops, limoncello martinis. Great for wedding showers, baby showers, a Mother’s Day brunch, little girl’s birthday party.
A Little Cutie Is On the Way: Orange blossoms and other white floral accents with greenery; blood orange martinis, mandarin oranges used in centerpieces and tablescapes. Cute, cuter, cutest for a baby shower.
Rustic Elegance: Build your color scheme around a flower that you’ll use to decorate the party, then throw in a few other natural elements and you’ve got yourself a theme. Lavender, Peonies, Sunflowers, Daisies, Mixed Flowers. Use them in floral arrangements and decor; feature a signature cocktail around them; use them in scented soaps as favors; build your invitation suite around them. The possibilities are endless.
Into the Woods: Think forest / mountains, rustic wood, natural greenery with white floral accents, watercolor. This could lean toward rustic or you could elevate it to lean more elegant as well. Great for weddings OR, add in a few woodland creatures for a child’s birthday party or baby shower.
Pick A Color: Choose almost any color as the foundation for your theme, and then go with elements that incorporate that color for a classic look: flowers, napkins, candles, signage, ribbons, etc.
The possibilities really are endless. The point here is that color or theme can help guide you in the direction toward a look and feel for your event. Then all you have to do is find — or create — pieces that follow that color or theme.
And just like that, you can start Building your Bash!
